Walker is Running!
Businessman Seeking Council 7 Seat Signs “No Tax” Pledge
Annapolis, MD (June 2010) – Republican candidate Jerry Walker will file for election to the County Council, District 7 seat this week. Walker, a 35-year-old Gambrills resident, is a successful businessman elected in 2006 as a member of the Republican State Central Committee of Anne Arundel County.
Regarding his first experience in public service, Walker stated, “When I was elected to a leadership position in the Republican Party, I put my name on the ballot to represent the conservative principles that this great country was founded upon. As I seek to serve our community as the next District 7 Council member, I will ensure that the timeless principles of limited government, opportunity for all, and personal responsibility are woven throughout the decisions I am asked to make on your behalf.”
Walker pledged that he would not raise taxes stating, “We need elected officials with a business background who believe in fiscal responsibility and who will commit to not raising taxes. In order to back up my statement, I have signed the Maryland Tax Payers Association – Tax Pledge. This document is a signed public statement that I will oppose any increase in taxes while serving in office, and if I am chosen as the next council member for District 7, I will gladly honor that pledge.”
Born in Greenville South Carolina and raised in New York City until adulthood, Jerry’s family has a history of living the American Dream. Ellis Island has particular significance to the Walkers because Jerry’s great-grandfather immigrated through this facility from Greece to the United States in the early 1900’s.
After graduating high school, Jerry left New York to attend college, working numerous jobs to pay his bills. Through these opportunities, Jerry developed his interpersonal skills, strategic business decision making, and entrepreneurial spirit.
Jerry was recruited to work for a nationwide office equipment dealer on their sales team, and in 1996, he moved to Maryland to work for DCA Imaging Systems. At DCA, he was initially one of six employees and now runs the daily operations of the company as Vice President. Jerry is convinced that “We need more people with business experience involved in all levels of government,” which is one of the reasons he is running for office. He believes that the key to the future economic success of Anne Arundel County is for government to reduce its size, eliminate over-regulation, and keep taxes low for the people and businesses that call Anne Arundel County home.
Jerry has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business with a concentration in Economics from Liberty University. He is applying to Loyola University and John Hopkins as a post-graduate candidate for their MBA programs.
Walker builds his campaign on four major principles summarized and made memorable by the acronym “STEP” that stands for Smaller government, Tax limits, Economic recovery strategies, and Personal responsibility with leadership by example. Walker’s campaign slogan, “Improving Government One Step at a Time!” is not only a play on words, but also a promise of his commitment to taking action.
Jerry, known to be a hard-working volunteer and community builder, has membership and leader experience in the Greater Crofton and South County Chambers of Commerce, the Davidsonville Area Civic Association, the Gabriel Network and the Maryland Farm Bureau. In 2008, he served on the Anne Arundel County Impact fee Advisory Committee. He is a member of Grace Baptist Church and is an advocate and fund-raiser for the Crofton Regional Community Center. Mr. Walker is married to the former Michelle Olson of Bowie and they have a 3-year son, Andrew.
